To be honest, I had a pretty hard time deciding if I wanted to review this movie today. See, I like having all the movies that fit together but I honestly wasn’t sure if this really fit in the normal X-men universe or not. That plus the fact that if it did, I would have to wait until next year to review it kind of made me want to do it now. So anyways, Deadpool is one of my favorite anti-heroes because he is so different from just about every other character out there. I didn’t like what the did to the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but when I saw the trailers for this movie, I knew I just had to go see Deadpool.
The plot: Deadpool is riding in the back of a taxi cab but when he gets bored, he decides to climb into the passenger seat and starts a conversation with the cab driver, Dopinder. Noticing a picture of a girl who comments about it, prompting Dopinder to say that he loves her but his cousin Bantur stole her from him. Deadpool tells Dopinder that he should hold onto love and never let it go then realizes that he left his ammo bag at home and only has 12 bullets in his gun. Deadpool has Dopinder let him off in the middle of an overpass and begins drawing a picture before he begins speaking to the audience. Meanwhile, a man named Ajax is making an arms deal with a warlord and when the deal is concluded, Ajax and his men leave. Deadpool notices the convoy and drops off the overpass, landing inside one of the cars. Deadpool proceeds to fight with the men inside the car and eventually causes the car to wreck. At Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters, Colossus is watching the news and after seeing the report of the accident, has Negasonic Teenage Warhead, an X-man trainee, join him as he goes to deal with Deadpool. Meanwhile, Deadpool starts killing the men shooting at him and when he runs out of bullets, he goes looking for a man named Francis but can’t find him. When one of the men managed to survive and comes after Deadpool with a pair of knives, Deadpool skewers him with the swords he carries. As he is lifting the man up, Deadpool begins having an internal monologue with the audience and starts to explain how this all started. In flashback, we see Wade Wilson, a former Special Ops turned mercenary track down a teenaged stalker and convince him not to come near the girl he is stalking. After finishing the job, Wade heads to Sister Margaret’s, a bar that also serves as a place for mercenaries to pick up jobs. After starting a fight in the hopes that one of the men will be killed and he will win the dead pool, Wade meets a prostitute named Vanessa and they end up spending the night together. The two end up dating throughout the year and Wade ends up proposing around Christmas but he then passes out. Going to the doctor, Wade learns that he is diagnosed with serious cancer and while Vanessa plans on finding ways for Wade to fight it, Wade is already giving up hope. Back in the present, Deadpool is trying to figure out where Francis might be when he sees one last guy on a motorcycle. After throwing one of his swords to take out the motorcycle’s front wheel, Deadpool proceeds to beat the guy, knocking off the man’s helmet to reveal it is Ajax, before finally stabbing him in the shoulder, pinning him to the freeway. Deadpool starts talking to Ajax, who he refers to as Francis, and when Ajax doesn’t seem to recognize him, Deadpool lifts up his mask to show Ajax his face. Ajax recognizes Deadpool as Wade Wilson and says Deadpool should be thanking him as he has made him practically immortal. Deadpool is about to attack Ajax some more but he is grabbed by Colossus, who throws Deadpool into a car. In flashback, Wade is planning on leaving Vanessa but she refuses to let him leave or give up hope. Heading to the Sister Margaret’s, Wade meets a recruiter, who says his organization will cure Wade’s cancer and give him special abilities but Wade turns him down. Later that night, as he is lying in bed with Vanessa, Wade decides to leave her and contact the man in the hopes that they really can cure him. Back in the present, Colossus chastises Deadpool for causing all of the destruction and Deadpool mocks him but when Ajax uses the opportunity to escape, Deadpool starts attacking Colossus and ends up breaking both of his hands and one of his legs. Colossus handcuffs Deadpool and plans to bring him to see Professor X but Deadpool heals and proceeds to cut off his hand and escape. Flashing back, Wade is taken to a secret facility and strapped to a table and Ajax tells him that they inject mutated blood into people’s DNA and torture them until they either mutate or die. Wade manages to survive the ordeal, learning Ajax’s real name in the process, but Ajax decides to use one last torture to trigger Wade’s mutation and tells him that they aren’t really making super heroes but rather super-powered slaves which they sell to the highest bidder. Wade’s mutation triggers, resulting in him gaining a super powered healing factor but causes his body to be covered in burn-like scars. After Ajax checks on Wade and leaves, Wade uses a match that he grabbed from Ajax’s assistant Angel Dust to start an explosion that frees himself. Wade then starts fighting with Ajax but Ajax overpowers Wade and stabs him with a rebar and leaves him to be burned alive in the fire. Wade survives the fire and considers going to see Vanessa but at the last second, he changes his mind as he doesn’t want her to see what he looks like. Wade heads to Sister Margaret’s and talks with his friend Weasel, who says that since Ajax believes he is dead, Wade can use that to his advantage. Deciding to call himself Deadpool, Wade starts working his way through Ajax’s men in search of Ajax, which brings us to the present. Wade had fallen into a garbage truck and rides it back to his house, which he shares with an old blind woman named Al. While waiting for his hand to grow back, Wade complains to Al about Ajax slipping through his fingers. Meanwhile, Ajax returns to his base, where Angel is prepping some of the mutant slaves to be shipped out, and tells her about Wade. The two head to Sister Margaret’s and ask Weasel where to find Wade but when Weasel doesn’t answer, Ajax notices a picture of Wade and Vanessa behind the bar and has Angel grab it, deciding to go after Vanessa to get to Wade. Weasel calls Wade to warn him and Wade, along with Weasel, head to the strip club where Vanessa works to warn her. Wade sees Vanessa but chickens out and doesn’t talk to her and heads into the bathroom to work up the nerve. While he is gone, Vanessa is told that someone out back wants to see her about an old boyfriend and, believing it is Wade, Vanessa heads outside but is captured by Ajax and Angel. Wade finds out that she has been taken and heads hime to grab all of his guns so he can rescue Vanessa, then heads to Xavier’s to recruit Colossus and Negasonic to help him. Getting a ride from Dopinder, Wade asks him if he has had any luck winning back his girl but Dopinder says he hasn’t because Bantur is too crafty. When a shout is heard from the trunk, Dopinder admits that Bantur is tied up in the trunk and he plans on taking Wade’s advise and killing him. Wade tells Colossus that he did not tell him that and chastises Dopinder, while whispering that he is proud of him. Arriving at a crashed helicarrier that serves as Ajax’s base, the three heroes head towards it when Negasonic points out that Wade left his dufflebag with all of his guns in the cab. Wade calls Dopinder but when he doesn’t get an answer, he decides to go ahead. They are soon surrounded by armed men and Ajax shouts at Wade from the helicarrier’s deck. Angel jumps down and punches Colossus but Negasonic uses her power, which is the ability to fire atomic bursts from her body, to knock Angel away. As the men begin shooting at Wade and Negasonic, Colossus and Angel both recover and begin fighting each other. Wade and Negasonic deal with all of the men, then Negasonic uses her power to launch Wade up to the helicarrier’s deck. Wade sees that Ajax has placed Vanessa in the oxygen deprivation tube and turns it on before he starts to fight with Wade. Wade manages to throw one of his swords at the the tube so that Vanessa can breathe, then fights with Ajax but Ajax overpowers Deadpool. Vanessa uses the sword to free herself then stabs Ajax with it, allowing Deadpool to recover and beat Ajax. Meanwhile, Angel has managed to get the upper hand on Colossus and is attempting to strangle him but Negasonic uses her poowers to blast Angel away, inadvertently knocking her into the support struts for the helicarrier. As the helicarrier tilts, Ajas is knocked off the deck by a sliding crate and Wade places Vanessa in the tube to keep her safe from the fall while below, Colossus carries an unconscious Angel and Negasonic from the crash. When the dust settles, Colossus and Negasonic rescue Vanessa from the debris and Wade shouts out at them bat Ajax suddenly attacks him. Wade manages to get the upperhand and demands that Ajax restore his looks but Ajax says he can’t. Wade prepares to shoot Ajax and Colossus tries to talk him out of it but Wade goes ahead and kills him so that Ajax won’t be able to do what he did to Wade to anyone else. Vanessa confronts Wade and he apologizes for leaving her and she removes his mask, and the second one he had on, to see his face and says that she can get used to it and, after shooing away Colossus and Negasonic, the two kiss as Wade plays Careless Whisper on his phone. In a post credits scene, mimicking Ferris Bueller, Deadpool says that Cable will be in the sequel.
Deadpool was well received by the critics, earning a certified fresh rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus on the site is that it is, “Fast, funny, and gleefully profane, the fourth-wall-busting Deadpool subverts superhero film formula with wildly entertaining — and decidedly non-family-friendly — results.” There was a lot of controversy when the movie came out over parents taking young children to see it since this was rated R. The movie was a box office hit, having currently earned over $761 million, making it the highest grossing R rated film, the highest grossing film in the X-Men franchise, and currently the 4th highest grossing film of 2016.
This is one of the best comic book movies to keep the character as close to the comics as possible. Ryan Reynolds was a great choice for Wade Wilson back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and showed it again here, showing an excellent since of timing and quick wit with his lines. Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, and T.J. Miller were also really good in their roles. Admittedly, the plot felt a little simplistic, more or less being a revenge movie, but the writing was really good and made the movie a lot of fun to watch. The various 4th wall breaks that Deadpool were great and really kept the character true to the comics. The action sequences were very well choreographed and the special effects were also good, though I didn’t completely like the look of Colossus. If you are looking for a non-kid-friendly comic book movie, or just a good action movie, then you will love this one.
