Now I will admit that today’s movie is one of the movies that I reasons that I bought this 8 pack of horror movies. The original C.H.U.D. was one of the more disturbing horror movies I remember seeing as a kid. However, I never got a chance to watch the sequel, usually because I never saw it in the video store to rent, or I would want to rent something else instead. Years later, I had bought the original movie on DVD and looked for the sequel but only found it as an import, which would not work since I don’t have an all region DVD player. Then I saw it was on this collection of movies but I still didn’t but it until recently. So I am hoping the wait was worth it as I watch today’s movie, C.H.U.D. 2: Bud The Chud.
The plot: At a military hospital, a meeting is held where the panel decides to discontinue the C.H.U.D. program, which upsets Colonel Masters, the man in charge of the program. Downstairs, the last of the C.H.U.D., Bud Oliver, is about to be injected by a doctor when he breaks free from his restraints and attacks one of the doctors before he is able to be frozen and contained. Colonel Masters orders the body shipped to the Centre for Disease Control in the small town of Whitehaven, where it can be stored until the colonel gets the project funded again. In Whitehaven, Steve Williams and his friend Kevin are cleaning science storage area after Steve accidentally started a fire in the lab. They discover the cadaver that their science teacher is planning to show to the class the next day, but accidentally push the gurney out the door, where it ends up rolling down the highway. Deciding to get another body so they don’t get in trouble, they sneak into the Disease Control Centre and end up stealing Bud’s body. Taking the body back to Steve’s house, Steve places it in the bathtub while he tries to figure out what they are going to do next but when his mom knocks on the door, he accidentally drops a hair dryer into the tub, reviving Bud. Carrying the revived body into the basement, the two boys leave to go tell their friend Katie. However, Bud breaks out of the basement and ends up chasing after the family dog, catching it in the back yard and biting it. Back at the DCC, Masters and Graves, his aide, are speaking with one of the doctors about the theft and ask for a worst case scenario and the doctor explains that the C.H.U.D. is like a plague, feeding on brain matter and once the Chud enzyme is introduced to a body, it will reanimate the body and the new C.H.U.D. will go out and infect people. Back in town, Bud wanders around the neighborhood and ends up attacking several people, turning them into new C.H.U.D.s. Steve, Kevin, and Katie hear a police bulletin listing Katie’s car in connection with the body theft and decide to return the body, only to find it missing. The next day, Steve’s little sister is looking out the window when she sees the mailman being attacked by their poodle and dragged off. Katie and Kevin show up to pick up Steve so they can look for Bud but when they hide when Masters shows up looking for them. They head into town to look for Bud and soon find him in the back of a truck and follow after him. Meanwhile, Masters, Graves, and their driver stop at a burger joint and discover that the people inside have been turned into C.H.U.D. so Masters uses a bazooka to blow up the building. Katie, Kevin, and Steve follow the truck carrying Bud to a barn and head inside, only to discover more C.H.U.D. inside. Bud has become infatuated with Katie and goes after her but Kevin tries to stop him and gets thrown up into the hay loft. When the Masters and the military show up, Bud and most of the C.H.U.D. escape but one stays behind and is frozen by Masters’ men. As Masters proceeds to yell at the kids, they notice that the frozen body is quickly thawing out and Masters realizes that the Chud enzyme is mutating and becoming stronger. Masters has the kids taken back to the DCC where he and Graves begin questioning the kids about Bud. When Masters realizes that it is Halloween, he decides to go warn people and has his driver take him into town, not realizing that his driver has been turned into a C.H.U.D. by Steve’s dog. Realizing there is a school dance that night that would attract the C.H.U.D., Kevin tells Graves about it but before they can do anything, Bud suddenly smashes through a window and tries to grab Katie. Steve, Kevin, and Katie manage to escape while Graves tries to hold off the C.H.U.D. The three kids head to the school in the military’s van and Kevin tries working out an idea on how to kill the C.H.U.D. Meanwhile, Bud leads all of the C.H.U.D. to the high school and they head inside to the dance. Kevin, has Katie go to the loading dock and they head inside, where they discover their science teacher has been turned into a C.H.U.D. Kevin freezes the teacher and as he starts to thaw, he uses some electrodes to electrocute the C.H.U.D., causing it to explode. Realizing that adding electricity to the frozen bodies will kill them, Kevin plans to lure the C.H.U.D. into the school pool and freeze them inside it. Katie decides to act as bait and lures Bud and the other C.H.U.D. into the pool. Kevin and Steve begin throwing containers of CO2 into the pool to freeze the C.H.U.D., but Steve is bit in the foot before the C.H.U.D. are all frozen. Before the can electrocute the C.H.U.D., Bud manages to break free from the ice and continue chasing after Katie, chasing her up onto the high dive. Kevin uses the army’s freeze gun to freeze Bud and he falls, smashing into pieces on the ice. Meanwhile, Steve manages to use wires from the clock to electrocute the C.H.U.D., causing them all to explode. The next day, Katie picks up Kevin for school but when she asks where Steve is, Kevin says he is gone and hands her a note, where Steve said he has gone to see the world. Steve and his family’s dog are seen hitchhiking and when they get into a truck, the driver turns out to be a C.H.U.D., as is Steve and Colonel Masters, who is hiding in the back.
You know what can ruin a good horror movie, when you decide to make the sequel into a horror comedy. While there were some funny parts in this movie, it was really disappointing for me. The acting was ok, though the whole talking C.H.U.D.s was kind of stupid. The plot contained only loose connections to the original movie and wasn’t very original on it’s own. They totally changed how the C.H.U.D. came about, making them more like zombies than the radioactive mutants in the original movie. The special effects, what few there were, were ok, in that typical 80’s sense of things. The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of real horror in this movie, as they chose to make it more of a comedy than a horror movie. There were some funny bits, such as one of the C.H.U.D.’s head getting knocked off and the body tries to pick it up, but continuously kicks the head away from it. All in all, watch it if you really want to see a bad sequel, or want some stupid laughs, but otherwise, just stick to the original.
