I am going to go ahead and apologize right now and ask that everyone please not think less of me for owning this movie. It was part of a lot of movies that I got off Ebay years ago but honestly, I should not own this movie. I don’t know why I still own this movie. No one should own this movie. This is one of those movies that you watch once and then try to rinse your eyes out with sulfuric acid so you can try and erase the memory of this movie. So if I am saying this, think about how disturbing it is to know that this film got remade in 2010. Oh well, let’s get this over with and again, I apologize for this. Today’s movie is I Spit On Your Grave (1978).
The plot: Manhattan writer Jennifer Hills has decided to rent a cabin in the Connecticut woods in order to try and write her first novel. Arriving in town, she stops for gas where she meets Johnny, the gas station manager, and his two unemployed friends, Andy and Stanley. As she is unpacking at the cottage she meets and befriends Matthew, a mildly mentally challenged delivery man for the local grocery store. Matthew, who is friends with Johnny and the others, tells them that he saw Jennifer’s tits so the three men decide that they are going to help Matthew have sex with Jennifer. One day, as Jennifer is relaxing in a canoe, Andy and Stanley show up in their boat and proceed to drag her canoe further down the river. When Jennifer finally reaches the shore, she learns what they plan to do and tries to fight them off but the four men take turns chasing her down, assaulting her, and raping her throughout the woods and even in her cabin until she passes out. Not wanting to have her go to the police, Johnny tells Matthew to kill her but Matthew, feeling sorry for her, covers the knife in some of her blood and tells the others that she is dead. After physically recovering from her ordeal, Jennifer takes her revenge on the four men; hanging Matthew from a tree, castrating Johnny and letting him bleed to death, using an axe on Andy, and disemboweling Stanley with his boat’s propeller.
I Spit On Your Grave (1978) received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Roger Ebert called it a vile bag of garbage and said that attending it was one of the most depressing experiences of his life. Both Siskel and Ebert voted it as the worst movie ever made in 1980. Due to the rather brutal rape and killings in the movie, the movie was heavily censored in some countries and outright banned in others. There were some unofficial remakes of the movie in the 80’s but an official remake was filmed in 2010 and a sequel to that movie was filmed in 2013.
One word description of this movie? Brutal. One word description of how I feel watching it? Bleh. This movie is not a good movie to watch, and I am not just talking about the subject matter. The characters were very bland and the acting among them was pretty stiff and one dimensional. As for the subject matter, well….that is just rough watching at times. The rape scenes were almost 30 minutes long. Who honestly wants to see that. My mind is still boggled that this movie got remade. I can’t think of any reason why you should watch this film.
