January 18th, 2015 Movie – Freddy Vs Jason

freddy vs jason

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE?!!!! In 2003, horror fans were finally able to see the fight that they have been wanting for almost 20 years. Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees were two of the biggest stars in horror movies during the 80’s and while their popularity may have declined some in the 90’s, they are still two of the most recognized names in the genre. Many fans, my brothers and myself included, would always wonder which of these two serial killers would win in a fight. Thanks to director Ronny Yu, fans were able to find out in today’s movie, Freddy Vs. Jason.

The plot: By redacting many of the past new stories and using experimental drugs to block kids from dreaming, the adults of Springwood have managed to end the terror of Freddy Krueger. But Freddy has a plan to re-install fear and nightmares back into the community. Freddy tricks Jason Vorhees into going to Springwood and start killing people in order to get the people to start having nightmares again. But while Freddy is starting to get his strength and powers back, he is unable to control Jason and stop him from killing the teenagers before Freddy can. While a group of teenagers try to figure out what is going on and how to stop all the deaths, Freddy manages to use a sedative to put Jason asleep so that he can kill Jason in his dreams. But the teenagers drive Jason’s body back to Crystal Lake and manage to bring Freddy out of the dream world in order for the two titans to have a winner take all clash.

A crossover between two series, Freddy Vs Jason counts as both the 11th movie in the Friday The 13th series and the 8th movie in the Nightmare On Elm Street series. The movie came out to mixed reviews getting a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The overall consensus among the critics was that “Fans of the two horror franchises will enjoy this showdown. But for everyone else, it’s the same old slice and dice.” The fans certainly did enjoy it as it would make $82.5 million domestically, which is the highest domestic gross for a movie from either series. It also earned another $32.2 million over seas, bringing the total to $114.8 million, which was the second highest grossing film behind the Nightmare On Elm Street remake in 2010.

The kid in me was all sorts of excited when this movie came out but the adult me was a little bit disappointed in the ending. I remember an interview Robert Englund did for this movie where he essentially said that the director didn’t want buckets of blood, he wanted gallons. There was definitely a lot of blood in this movie. The kill scenes, which was what most people look forward to with these movies, were definitely eye-catching and in some cases pretty brutal. Robert Englund had one of his better performances as Freddy Krueger, both his sarcastic comments as well as the occasional bad pun staying true to the character he played for 20 years. Of course, the thing I hated about this movie is the thing that just about everyone complained about. No matter which one you liked more, everyone wanted to see a clear cut winner in this movie. So to have the ending play out like that, Jason walking away holding Freddy’s severed head and then having Freddy wink all of a sudden, was like a giant F.U. to the fans. If they didn’t want to give us a clear cut winner then make it where neither of them wins. But that ending was just terrible because it left everyone feeling unsatisfied.

Even though the ending is kind of crap, if you are a fan of Friday The 13th or Nightmare On Elm Street, this is one movie you should not miss.

Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5
