October 4th, 2014 Movie – Beetlejuice

I know what you are thinking. You are probably surprised that I am not watching another cheesy sci-fi movie. Well, I did tell you that I bought a lot of movies, but not all of them were in the Sci-Fi invasion set. For instance, one of the movies I bought featured Michael Keaton as “the ghost with the most”. To be honest, I don’t know why I didn’t own this before because it is awesome, but since I own it now it is a moot point. So let’s get to watching today’s movie, Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice.

The plot: Adam and Barbara Maitland have recently died and before they even get a chance to really process that fact, they are forced to watch as a new family, the Deetzs, moves into their house. Trying rather unsuccessfully to scare these people out of the house, the Maitlands meet another ghost, a self proclaimed “bio-exorcist” named Beetlejuice, who offers to help them with their problem. However, the Maitlands don’t trust Beetlejuice, and after befriending the Deetz’s daughter Lydia, decide to try and find a way to coexist with the new family. But when a family friend of the Deetz begins the process of exorcising the Maitlands, Lydia unleashes Beetlejuice in order to save her new friends.

In 1989, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton teamed up and made a movie that gave Keaton an iconic role as Batman. However, a year earlier, they had teamed up and released a movie that provided a character for Keaton that was no less iconic when they made Beetlejuice. Now originally, this was supposed to be a straight up horror movie, but after numerous rewrites, it was turned into the comedy classic that everyone knows today. It was one of the most successful movie to come out in 1988 and even made it onto the AFI’s list of top 100 Comedies, which is a testament to how funny this movie is.

“AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER, EVERY TIME I SEE IT.” How funny is it that a quote from this movie pretty much sums up my opinion on this. This movie is so funny mainly due to one man, Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton is great and honestly makes this movie the success that it is. You could tell that he was having a lot of fun with this character. Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Winona Ryder are also really good with their characters. Everyone else is ok in their roles but a lot of the time, they seem to be there just to be the straight man to Keaton’s over the top antics.

So if you want to watch the ghost with the most do his thing, you can try saying his name three times. Or just watch the DVD…probably a lot easier.

Rating: 4 out of 5
