Today I watched a classic film of the 80’s; Clash Of The Titans. I love this movie. The first time I ever saw this film i was 5 years old and it was at a friends house during a sleep over. This was also the first movie I saw that involved Ray Harryhausen; a true Hollywood legend. Coincidentally, this was also the last feature film that Harryhausen did.
The movie is based on the Greek myth of Perseus. After falling in love with Andromeda, Perseus saves the city of Joppa from the curse it was under and is set to wed Andromeda. However, the boasting of Queen Cassiopeia angers the goddess Thetis and as punishment, Andromeda is commanded to be sacrificed to the Kraken. The only hope Perseus has to save Andromeda is by slaying Medusa and using the gorgon’s head against the Kraken.
Now I love movies that Ray Harryhausen was involved in. It doesn’t hurt that they almost always involve some sort of giant monster attacking people. I also enjoy reading about the Greek Myths. So this movie was right up my alley. Granted, when 5 year old me first saw it, he didn’t know a single thing about Greek mythology. He was more interested in the giant monster trashing the city. And Medusa. And the 2 headed dog. And the giant scorpions. And Pegasus. And Calibos.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I can actually appreciate this movie a little more. Now while not 100% accurate, this still followed the myth pretty closely. But I can appreciate some of the changes because they do make for a more exciting movie. Now for those that have never read the myth, Calibos was created solely for this movie. But it worked. Instead of it just being good guy versus monster, it added a villain to work against the hero and try to foil his plans. The only real problem I had with the movie was Harry Hamlin. I honestly felt like his acting was very stiff and wooden so it kind of took away from his character. But all in all, this is a very enjoyable movie.
